Disney Pins are frequently released at special events, movie premieres, vintage pin trading events or to commemorate the opening day of a new attraction. Some vintage Disney pins are worth quite a lot and have reached prices of over $1000 at auction sites such as eBay. Pins are enamel, vinyl or enamel cloisonné with a metal base.

While pins had been sold in the Disney Parks since the beginning, trading was a more recent addition, and it wasn't until 1999 that Disney Pin Trading was introduced. The next year, the craze spread to the Disneyland Resort, which has become the home of most trading events.

Since then, pin trading and collecting has spread to Disneyland Resort Paris, Tokyo Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Shanghai Disneyland and Disney Cruise Lines with each location creating their own pins and traditions. Although the trading of pins has been suspended in Tokyo Disney Resort, pins are still offered as prizes at carnival games, and a relatively small amount of pins are available.

The Disney Pin Trading and collecting hobby is continuously growing and new pins are released weekly from around the world.
