Mebetoys (MEccanica BEsana TOYS) was an Italian model cars toy manufacturer which produced model die-cast cars during the 1960s.
In 1966 the creation of the Mebetoys Models Division in Milan was announced.
Mario Besana -the actual Martoys / BBurago Chairman at the time- teamed up with his brothers to transform the former MEccanica BEsana TOYS into a brand that stopped producing toys like keyrings and guns, but would produce only model diecast cars. The new brand would have been based on cars from the mid 60's Italian Market. But competition was strong; Model die-cast firms like Politoys (later APS- Polistil), Edil Toys, Mercury, and (abroad) Gama models, Schuco, Dinky Toys, Corgi-Juniors, Spot-On.
Excellent marketing campaigns contributed to a quick rise to fame.
But suddenly, after the first successful 40 models, Mr. Besana sold the brand to the Mattel company which used its Italian factory at Oleggio Castello, Novara, to produce the brand Mebetoys in the1970s. Besana used the money gained by selling the brand to start his Martoys-BBurago adventure.
Mattel marketed a range of 1/43 and 1/25 scale models under the Mebetoys name until the early 1980s, when the name was dropped, and the models were briefly marketed as part of the Hot Wheels range before being discontinued entirely.
